ORGULLO

A mí me funcionó.

PRIDE

Our friend Adrián, an ex-co-worker, retired a few years ago and has been collecting passport stamps ever since. He decided, a few months ago, to start a diet that doesn’t allow him to eat many things we enjoyed together before.

He no longer eats pork chops; says no to fried meat and doesn’t eat pizza at all, not even the one on cauliflower crust. He has significantly reduced his intake of flour and doesn’t drink soft drinks or juices. If he’s going to drink alcohol, it’s always whisky because it’s the alcoholic beverage with the least caloric content.

I’m still tasting and munching on anything I can. I like food and, even though I try to eat reduced portions, I will eat everything with very little restrictions.

Last Thursday, as usual, we had our happy hour in a cool and cozy place in Santurce. When the waitress came to our table to take the order Adrián said he’d order for both of us. I gave him a surprised look, but decided to follow his game and took a call while he ordered.

We enjoyed our gossip and jokes, and after a few minutes, the food finally got there. “All this is for you?” I asked, visibly surprised. “For both of us,” he answered. “I understand you are not on a diet and I respect that, but I want you to eat as if you were,” he said. I called the waitress and ordered a “can can” pork chop, “birria” tacos and a meat lovers pizzetta. “Matea, what are you doing? I’m on a diet and I can’t eat any of that,” Adrian screamed. And that’s how, my dears, people that expect you to live, feel and love like them, live, feel and love themselves.

That’s how they act when the want to impose their religious dogmas on those who don’t share them. That’s how they go through life judging what others do with their body, based only on what they are or aren’t willing to do with theirs.

If sex is perceived through the senses, which are so unique and diverse as humanity itself, then why would someone invest their time and energy in judging, pointing at, condemning and criminalizing those who live, practice, and feel it differently?

And if gender identity is intrinsic and inherently singular, so unique for every person, why not want it to be? Why?

I have read and listened to a lot of nonsense in my short but intense life, but never anything as ridiculous as saying that the LGBTTIQ+ community has an agenda to convert people into homosexuals and transgenders.

As far as I can remember, I have never seen anyone from that community handing out flyers or brochures saying “I’m gay. It worked for me. You should try it.” Neither have I seen vans with loudspeakers (called “tumbacocos” in Puerto Rico) “rescuing souls”. And never, at least until today, has a trans woman knocked on my door with warnings or threats that if I don’t convert to trans, I’m going to burn in the flames of hell.

And I think the reason for that is that, as far as I know, the LGBTTIQ+ community doesn’t have a sacred book that orders them to “go out in the world and preach lgbttiqism”.

That’s why, my dears, we should live and let live. There is no greater love than freedom.
